Your Guide to the Riviera Nayarit’s & Puerto Vallarta’s Most Beautiful Certified Beaches

May 28, 2026 Blog Icon Category: News

You’ve picked a beautiful corner of the world to explore. The Riviera Nayarit is blessed with a string of beaches that shimmer with recognition. Some carry the prestigious Blue Flag. Others shine as a Platinum Beach. And here’s the part we love sharing most with guests: each of the three Marival Resorts rests right along one of these remarkable shores. You wake up, step outside, and you’re already somewhere special.

What is a Blue Flag beach?

Imagine a beach that feels just right the moment you arrive. Clean sand under your feet. Clear water that invites you in. Thoughtful touches everywhere you look. That is the spirit of a Blue Flag beach.

The story begins in 1985, when the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) in France launched a project to show how pollution travels across oceans. Students released bottles into the sea, tracking currents and spreading awareness. From that idea grew a global symbol. A blue flag, a white circle, three waves.

Today, the Blue Flag is one of the most respected eco-labels in the world. It is awarded to beaches, marinas, and tourism boats that meet strict standards of quality and sustainability.

A Blue Flag beach is beautiful and well cared for. It invites you to enjoy it and understand it.

Blue Flag beach requirements: Water quality, safety, and sustainability criteria

Earning a Blue Flag is no small feat. Beaches must meet and maintain a long list of criteria that fall under three main umbrellas:

1. Environmental Education and Information

You will find clear signage, beach maps, and details about local ecosystems. Many beaches host activities that help visitors connect with nature in meaningful ways.

2. Water Quality

The water is tested monthly to make sure it’s clean, safe, and free from pollutants. No unpleasant odors. No debris drifting by. Just that inviting, sparkling blue.

3. Environmental Management

Beaches are kept clean with care for local wildlife. Facilities are maintained. Waste is sorted and managed responsibly. Sensitive habitats nearby are protected and monitored. Even transportation matters: Efforts are made to encourage walking, cycling, public transportation, and low-impact travel.

All of this works together to create a beach that feels effortless for you, yet is supported by constant attention behind the scenes.

Blue Flag beaches you can visit in the Riviera Nayarit

You will find several Blue Flag beaches along the coast, stretching from Puerto Vallarta up into Riviera Nayarit. But let us point you to a favorite:

Nuevo Vallarta Beach

This long, golden stretch of beach sits just north of Puerto Vallarta, with soft sand and gentle waves, not to mention its stunning sunsets. Nuevo Vallarta Beach proudly holds Blue Flag status, and it is home to two of our beautiful All-Inclusive resorts: Marival Emotions and Marival Distinct.

Days unfold easily at our Nuevo Vallarta beach resorts with morning walks along the shore, refreshing beachfront pools, all-day activities for all ages, quiet areas to unwind, and the beauty of the ocean always close by. If you’re staying at Marival Distinct, you can also enjoy access to our Mozzamare Beach Club for a day of luxury on a Blue Flag beach.

Nuevo Vallarta is the kind of place where you settle in without even trying.

What is Playa Platino? Mexico’s platinum beach certification

Now let us introduce you to something equally special. Playa Platino, or Platinum Beach.

This recognition is part of a national effort in Mexico, led by organizations like IMEEC along with government and private partners. The goal is simple and powerful… to protect beaches, elevate their quality, and celebrate their beauty.

Playa Platino beaches are known for their scenic appeal, strong environmental standards, safety, and accessibility. They are places where the community plays a role and sustainability is a shared commitment.

Six guiding goals shape this program:

  • Connection between people and place
  • Long-term sustainability
  • High-quality infrastructure
  • Community involvement
  • Environmental education
  • Cleanliness you can see and feel

Playa Platino beach requirements: Cleanliness, safety, and infrastructure

To earn the Playa Platino recognition, beaches must show consistent care and improvement for the local environment and for beachgoers alike.

This certification requires the government and local businesses to keep the shoreline pristine through monthly cleanup efforts. Clear signage must be present to guide visitors in protecting the environment, along with waste containers that are readily available and well-maintained.

Mexico beaches can reach even higher levels of Playa Platino certification through added features like lifeguard towers, swimming areas marked clearly with buoys, the presence of security like police officers and lifeguards, palapas for shade from the sun, restrooms and showers, handicap accessibility to the beach and its facilities, and of course ongoing testing to check the quality of the water.

It is all about creating a safe, welcoming, and well-maintained space for everyone.

Playa Platino beaches you can visit in the Riviera Nayarit

Let’s head a bit north, where the coastline becomes more secluded and quietly breathtaking.

Destiladeras Beach, Punta de Mita

This is where you will find a Playa Platino gem. Wide, open sands. Rhythmic waves. A sense of calm that settles in as soon as you arrive. Right here sits Marival Armony, an All-Inclusive resort retreat that feels in perfect harmony with its surroundings.

Days here move at a gentle pace with an array of wellness activities, long walks along a golden sand beach, vibrant pink and gold sunsets, and a stunning infinity pool overlooking this beautiful certified beach.

It is peaceful. It is grounding. It stays with you.
